Five questions you always had about being a host.

  

We met Tom Klose in a café, dressed in a light blue sweater with a black countryside hat, relaxed and very smiley. Do you know that feeling when you talk to someone and time just passes by?  We had one like that with Tom. He talked to us about his adventures and the wonderful experiences he got to live when he traveled Europe. From the Netherlands, on to Belgium, France, Spain and then finally Portugal, he played SofaConcerts along the way. Crossing North to South, he only needed his guitar, a backpack and the support of our awesome hosts.

What motivates artists to play a concert for a smaller audience?

“It’s a really nice thing to do, it’s really special, I don’t want to miss it. It’s the other side of music. I like to play live all the time and that is for me an outlet when I want to play for people. I think, it’s also because all of my role models did it. I always think of Matt Corby, because he did house concert tours in backyards, he is so good! He is so good in the extend of thinking what is he doing in someone’s backyard, but he is like ‘I don’t care about it, I just love to play for people in this kind of setting’ and I totally understand that. You are just closer to the people.”

We were really curious to jump on the other side of the story. If Tom found his motivation through house concerts, what about the hosts? What do they think about hosting an artist? How were their experiences and above all, what did they want to share with you?

                    So, how did it all begin?

Well, Hauke from Portugal got a request from Tom for his European tour and it was Hauke’s first sofa concert. One of his friends already hosted Tom Klose before and advised Hauke to book him.

“It was my first event with SofaConcerts and it was a great experience. I had absolutely no doubts hosting a sofa concert, we went for the concert to one of the most beautiful miradors of Lisbon because my "small problem" is that my cozy house hasn`t really a living room, I just came up with the idea to declare my amazing Lisbon to my "living room”. Having Tom play a concert in front of this amazing setting, was almost like a guarantee of a good evening for me.”

Manon & Sebastien heard about SofaConcerts from Joel Havea and have been hosting concerts in their beautiful house near Toulouse ever since. She listened to Tom Klose thinking he suited perfectly to the SofaConcerts aspect.

How would you define your SofaConcert’s experience?

Manon: “100% of success! In general, the guests are prudent, at best curious when we invite them, however each time at the end, they are happy and impressed by the artist, acknowledging the private moment that they just lived and they ask for more. It’s a concept that should be known better.”

Which were your doubts before registering as a host?

“The artist pending: I was scared that I wouldn’t find enough guests, that there wouldn’t be enough participation and that it would be too expensive for the artist. Finally, the artist gave me comfort toward that (and the guests were generous).”

What would you say to hosts who hesitate or have just registered?

“Try the experience at least once, you will be convinced. It’s an incredible opportunity to discover people, to share music and above all to live the emotion conveyed by the artist at the most.”

Could you give us a little anecdote from Tom Klose’s gig?

 “The fact that he did some effort to present his songs with some French words, as well as when he played a bit of piano which people liked.What wowed us is his voice… When the first notes came out, we all got shivers and got stuck right in, till the end of the song"

To whom would you recommend SofaConcerts?

“To everybody who likes music and likes to share it, without worrying about the size of your place because some artists don’t have any audience requirements, they just want to share their passion.

So, back to Tom! We asked him how it is to play for hosts that don’t speak the same language:

“I tried to speak french very hard, there are some people that didn’t speak english very well so I thought it would be funny. Every one is the same actually, it was in the back of my mind, but you have to live it to find out. They are into the same kind of bands and they live the same kind of way, they just live somewhere else. So that is really cool. Manon and Sebastien are the ideal living room concerts hosts, really. Everything was set up perfectly. Same with Hauke, he is the best. The setting was really nice, the overview over the town with the sunset going down...”

One more thing…

Tom played over a hundred house concerts and he’s planning to do a SofaConcerts tour in Germany in January. So far, the tour counts 19 concerts. At the very beginning of SofaConcerts, he was already excited about the idea of doing a host concert tour and was waiting for the platform to grow bigger which it did to this point. Cinq questions que chaque hôte s'est déjà posé.

   

Nous avons rencontré Tom Klose autour d’un café, habillé d’un sweatshirt bleu clair et d’un chapeau noir, tout souriant et calme. Tu sais, c’est le genre de personne avec qui tu parles et tu ne vois pas le temps passer. Il nous a parlé de ses aventures et de son expérience lors de sa tournée en Europe. Des Pays-Bas vers la Belgique, en passant par la France puis l’Espagne et finalement le Portugal, Tom a semé sa musique sur son passage. Il a voyagé du nord au sud avec sa guitare, son sac à dos et le support de nos hôtes incroyables !  

Qu’est-ce qui motive les musiciens à jouer pour une petite audience ?

Tom: « C’est vraiment quelque chose à faire, c’est très spécial, je ne veux pas rater ça ! C’est l’autre côté de la musique. J’aime jouer live tout le temps, c’est pour moi un exutoire de jouer pour les gens. Je pense que c’est aussi grâce à mes modèles qui l’ont fait. Je pense toujours à Matt Corby qui a fait des concerts dans le jardin des gens, il est vraiment bon ! Si bon, qu’on se demande ce qu’il faisait dans leurs jardins. Mais il s’en fiche, il veut juste jouer pour les gens dans ce genre d’atmosphère. Et je le comprends très bien ! Tu es proche de ton audience. »

Nous étions curieux de rassembler l’autre côté de l’histoire. Si Tom a trouvé sa motivation grâce aux concerts privés, quid des hôtes ? Que pensent-ils d’accueillir les artistes ? Quels ont été leurs expériences et surtout que voudraient-ils partager avec toi ?

Alors, comment tout a commencé ?

Hauke a reçu une demande de Tom lors de sa tournée Européenne. Un des amis d’Hauke lui a recommandé Tom et a accepté sa demande. Un « oui » qui restera dans les mémoires.

« C’était mon premier concert et c’était une superbe expérience. Je n'ai eu absolument aucun doute d’organiser un Sofa concert. Pour cela, nous sommes allés en haut d’un des plus beaux miradors de Lisbonne parce que mon ‘petit problème’ c’est que ma jolie maison n’a pas de salon.  Donc je suis venu avec l’idée de déclarer Lisbonne comme mon salon. Pour moi, vivre un concert incroyable était garantie par ce magnifique cadre. »

Manon & Sebastien ont entendu parler de SofaConcert par Joel Havea et depuis, ont accueilli des concerts privés dans leur magnifique maison à Toulouse. Elle a écouté Tom Klose et a directement pensé qu’il était parfait pour un Sofa concert.

En 3 mots, comment définirais-tu ton expérience SofaConcerts ?

Manon: « 100% de réussite ! En général les invités sont frileux, curieux au mieux lorsqu’on les invite, mais en repartant ils sont tous ravis, impressionnés par l’artiste et le moment privilégié qu’ils ont vécu et nous en redemandent. C’est un concept qui ne demande qu’à être mieux connu. »

Quelles ont été tes doutes sur SofaConcerts avant de t’enregistrer en tant qu’hôte ?

« Les attentes de l’artiste : j’avais peur de ne pas regrouper assez de monde, qu’il n’y ait pas assez de participation et que ça revienne trop cher à l’artiste. Au final les artistes m’ont mis à l’aise par rapport à ça, (et les invités ont été généreux.) »

A qui recommanderais-tu SofaConcerts ?

« A tous ceux qui aiment la musique et le partage, sans se restreindre sur la place disponible dans l’habitation car certains artistes n’ont pas d’exigences en termes de quantité de public, ils cherchent juste à partager leur passion. »

Qu’est-ce que tu dirais aux hôtes qui viennent juste ou hésitent à s’inscrire ?

« Tentez l’expérience au moins une fois, et vous serez convaincus. C’est une chance inouïe de découvrir des gens, de partager de la musique, et surtout de vivre l’émotion transmise par l’artiste au plus près. »

Peux-tu nous donner une petite anecdote du concert avec Tom Klose ? 
« Le fait qu’il ait fait l’effort de présenter ses chansons avec quelques mots français, le fait qu’il ait fait un petit passage au piano ont bien plu. Mais ce qui nous a tous sciés c’est sa voix… lorsque les premières notes sont sorties, nous avions tous la chair de poule et sommes restés scotchés sur nos chaises jusqu’à la fin de la chanson. »

Revenons vers Tom ! Nous nous demandions ce qu'il en était des hôtes qui ne parlent pas la même langue ou anglais, voici ce que Tom nous a répondu :

« J’ai vraiment essayé de parler français, il y a quelques personnes qui ne parlaient pas anglais, c’était assez drôle. En fait, chaque personne se ressemble, c’était déjà en moi, mais tu dois le vivre pour le comprendre. Ils aiment les mêmes musiques, vivent de la même manière que toi, ils habitent juste dans un autre pays. Donc, ça c’est vraiment super. Manon et Sebastien sont les hôtes idéaux, vraiment. Tout était parfait. Pareil pour Hauke, il est le meilleur. Le cadre était super avec le panorama sur la ville et le coucher du soleil… »

Une dernière chose…

Tom a joué plus d’une centaine de concerts privés et organise en janvier une tournée SofaConcerts en Allemagne. Pour l’instant la tournée compte 19 concerts. Au début de SofaConcerts, il avait déjà en tête de le faire et attendait que sa communauté se développe.
